As well as being a road race for runners, the Komen Race for the Cure® is an emotionally charged event that attracts many first timers and recreational runners. It is an opportunity for thousands of women, men and their families, running or walking, to spread the breast cancer message within their communities. Up to 75 percent of the funds raised at the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure® remain here in our 30-county service area to provide breast health research, diagnostics, screening, treatment, services and education for uninsured or under insured women. The remaining 25 percent goes to fund national research to discover the causes of breast cancer and, ultimately, its cures.

Naicco Labor Day Pow Wow
The Drum Returns to THE NEWARK EARTHWORKS
To celebrate, educate, and continue cultural traditions within the Native American community as well as an outreach to all peoples who would like to watch, learn, and experience. Open to public. Stay long enough to notice the many cultural exchanges taking place. Attending a pow wow can dispel many common misconceptions and negative images which separate peoples from each other. Please help publicize this event so that people can learn and enjoy the Native American experience and more of the history of the land which we all now share. This year’s special event is the new location itself. NAICCO is proud to be working with the Ohio Historical Society and the Licking County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau to bring the sound of drums and the Native American presence back to the Earthworks. Worldwide and throughout time, the festival gathering of people in ceremony is our oldest tradition. We are all pleased to invite everyone to gather at this site built some 2000 years ago by Native Americans for ceremony, and the largest set of geometric earthworks built anywhere in the world. Selected head dancers will lead an opening procession daily. Song, dance, arts, crafts, food, informational resources and community sharing will continue for three days.
Dates Labor Day weekend, September 1st through 3rd, 2012
Hours: Gates open daily at 11AM; Grand Entry of all dancers, along with song and drums, occurs twice daily at 1PM and again at 7PM (1PM on Monday).

2011 Hemophilia Walk
The Hemophilia Walk in Central Ohio hopes to increase awareness of hemophilia, foster camaraderie among the hemophilia community, and encourage people who haven’t ever been involved with the chapter to invest their time and financial resources in the lives of people living with hemophilia.
The Central Ohio Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation is dedicated to providing education, advocacy, and support programs for people with bleeding and clotting disorders, and to driving innovations that lead to a better quality of life for our consumers.
Over the last two years, the chapter has been on an exciting path of expansion. This growth has led to better support for those with bleeding and clotting disorders. None of this would’ve been possible without the money brought in through the Hemophilia Walk.

Rooms to Let II Temporary Art Space in an Empty House
Opening its second exhibition in a new house located on the east side of Franklinton a neighborhood just west of downtown Columbus, Rooms to Let II will host solo projects collectively within this modest and vacant circa 1920s home, in which each artist works within a room or designated space in or on the house. The house was lend to Rooms to Let artist by Ken Mollica. The neighborhood of east Franklinton, teetering on the verge of redevelopment, is dotted with pockets of occupied houses, standing as mementos of a former thriving community, these houses also root the shifting landscape as key points for the expanding and integrative community currently being build. This house will be rehabbed eventually, for now it stands gutted and waiting.
Artists from across the mid-west and beyond meet to respond to this house and its unique characteristics. This project run by Melissa Vogley Woods attempts to challenge the traditional constructs of an exhibition space, and crosses into a realm that is both familiar in shape, and new in use. The artists use the situation of the house as a starting point for their artistic action embracing its existing structure as well as layering new form and influences upon its surfaces. Working in this way questions the house as a place, as a memory, as a burden, or a place for change and renewal. The location and unique situation of the house allow for an immersive experience for visitors from the neighborhood and from the arts community.

Urban Active’s Thanksgiving Food Drive
Urban Active is partnering with Columbus’ Mid-Ohio Food Pantry, in an effort to help feed the less fortunate this Thanksgiving. Local residents who donate 5 non-perishable food items starting today thru November 23rd will not only help feed an under-privileged family, but also receive either a 14 Day Free Work-Out Pass (for non-members) or a Free Personal Training Session, one free upgrade or tan, one small smoothie or a 14 day buddy pass (for members) as a thank you for their contribution.
MSN recently reported that the Top 10 Items that Food Banks Need most:
- Proteins. Canned meats such as tuna, chicken or fish are high in protein and low in saturated fat. Peanut butter is rich in protein and high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils, the “good fats.” These are among the most expensive foods — too expensive for food banks to buy large quantities.
- Soups and stews. They are filling, particularly the “chunky” soups, and contain liquid for hydration. In addition, soups can be filled with protein and vegetables.
- Rice and pasta. “They’re really staples,” Nowak says. In addition, grain-based foods, such as pasta, are a good source of fiber and complex carbohydrates.
- Cereal, including oatmeal. Breakfast cereals can be an additional source of protein, and most cereals today include a variety of vitamins and minerals.
- Canned vegetables, including tomatoes and tomato sauce. Studies indicate that canned vegetables have about the same nutritional value as fresh vegetables.
- Canned or dried beans and peas. A staple of diets as early as 6700 B.C., beans are a low-fat source of protein and fiber.
- Canned fruits. Only a small amount of vitamin C is lost in the canning process, making these a healthy choice.
- Fruit juice (canned, plastic or boxed). Make sure it’s 100% juice.
- Prepared box mixes such as macaroni and cheese or Hamburger Helper.
- Shelf-stable milk. This includes dehydrated milk, canned evaporated milk and instant breakfasts.
